Banff joins national broadcast for Canada Day
There is no better place to celebrate than in Canada's first national park. The views are wonderful and the wide-open spaces and pristine mountain air provide an exhilarating and healthy break. However, for many people, travel is not possible during the pandemic, so Banff wants to come to Canadians.
Banff will join a national broadcast and online celebration to help Canadians come together, and enjoy the sights from Banff National Park, with a performance by 2021 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee, Jann Arden.
“We are thrilled to have Jann Arden perform in this special place. The area we now call Banff has been a meeting place for Canada’s First Peoples for 10,000 years. This has also become a symbol of Canada for so many Canadians, and an iconic destination for people from around the world,” said Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen. “It is fitting that Banff is participating in the national broadcast celebrating artists being able to perform again and provide the inspiration and enjoyment we so desperately need.”
Canadian Heritage will unveil the full day’s programming in late June. But Canadians will be able to watch the Lights On Canada Day performance on CBC Television and Canadian Heritage’s YouTube channel starting at 8 p.m. local time
“Across the country, artists, arts and culture workers and organizations have been hit hard by the pandemic. Nevertheless, communities such as Banff continue to support creators and celebrate Canada’s diversity,” said The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “Canadian Heritage is pleased to collaborate with these communities on Canada Day to showcase talented performing artists and entertainment industry artisans from coast to coast to coast.”
On July 1, the two-hour program will spotlight those whose job it is to bring beauty to our lives and make our culture shine. Lights on Canada Day will showcase artists and artisans in the entertainment industry across the country with performances in Ottawa, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Yukon, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories. Alberta will be represented by Banff!
Due to COVID restrictions, Jann Arden’s performance in Banff will not involve audience members and the performance will be available exclusively on the CBC TV broadcast and the Canadian Heritage YouTube channel, for behind the scenes interviews.
