Banff steps up COVID enforcement and security patrols

Banff RCMP and Community Peace Officers are increasing monitoring and enforcement to maintain safety in the community and security of property.

Last week, local law enforcement agencies were provided full authority to enforce public health orders and issue $1,200 fines for violations.

Although the focus is on educating people about the ban on gatherings of 15 or more people and the need to practice physical distancing, the Banff enforcement officers are prepared to implement restrictions if required. Local enforcement officers can help Alberta Health Services to impose quarantine for people not following mandatory isolation orders.

"So far we have had very good compliance in Banff," said Silvio Adamo, Director of Emergency Management for Banff and its Emergency Coordination Centre. "However, there are still some people who may not know about the most recent restrictions or are not taking the protocols seriously enough to stop the spread of COVID-19. We are prepared to step in if required."

Residents are asked to report online to Alberta Health Services any concerns about people not following mandatory isolation requirements or other risks of spread of COVID-19. (https://ephisahs.microsoftcrmportals.com/create-case/).

People can also Report a Problem online to the Town of Banff of call Community Peace Officers between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at 403.762.1218, or call RCMP after business hours at 403.762.2226.

Alberta Health Services restrictions include:

  • Mandatory 14-day self-isolation for returning international travellers or close contacts of people with confirmed COVID-19.
  • Mandatory 10-day self-isolation for people with symptoms that are not related to a pre-existing illness or health condition: cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose or sore throat.
  • Restrictions on mass gathering and businesses are now legally enforceable and subject to fines.
  • New operational protocols, including limited visitation, are now enforceable for all nursing homes, designated supportive living and long-term care facilities, seniors lodges and any facility in which residential addiction treatment services are offered.

Banff RCMP and Community Peace Officers are also patrolling in vehicles and on foot independently to practice physical distancing between personnel. With fewer tourist-related calls, officers are dedicating more time to patrols for monitoring property, and enforcement on gatherings and other social disorder issues. Focus includes the business district, hotels, public gathering spaces, industrial compound and destination sites. The increased enforcement presence is intended to deter crime, violations of health orders, and be available to the public.
