Tunnel Mountain Trail

Climb a mountain right in town!

Hike to the top of Banff’s smallest summit, with moderately steep switchbacks up the forested side of the mountain. At the top, you are rewarded with 360° views of the townsite, the Bow and Spray River valleys, the Banff Springs Golf Course, and surrounding peaks.

This is a very popular short hike in summer, spring and fall. In the winter, check the trail conditions before starting up, and wear suitable footwear – the trail can be icy and treacherous.

  • 2.3 kilometres, 300 metres elevation gain from lower trailhead (1 to 1.5 hours.)
  • Trail Map (PDF)

Bikes are not permitted on this trail. Please stay on the trail and do not shortcut across switchbacks.

  • Lower trailhead on St. Julien Road, near the Banff Centre
  • Upper trailhead on Tunnel Mountain Drive (closed to vehicles in winter)
