TOB_Candidate.jpgThe information in this section provides a brief introduction of the requirements for running for office in the Town of Banff. Candidates are responsible for understanding all legislation concerning elections, including nomination, eligibility, campaigning restrictions, campaign finance and disclosure, election offences and prohibitions at the voting stations. 

Important Notice for Candidates
Prior to accepting or using funds or donations for the purpose of campaigning, candidates are required to register an Application for Registration of Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate for Municipal Office with the Town of Banff.

The resources found in the Candidate Information Guide and this page are meant to assist individuals that are interested in seeking election and re-election to the office of Municipal Council. The information provided is general in nature and has been prepared as a reference only for candidates.

Nomination Package

This booklet has been compiled as a service to candidates and contains the required forms for a candidate's nomination. 

It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that he or she is fully aware of all of the nomination requirements and to comply with them. It is not the Returning Officer's responsibility to review the validity of the information contained in the candidate’s nomination paper. That responsibility lies with the courts if the candidate's nomination or election is challenged. Under the Criminal Code, it is an offence to make a false affidavit, punishable by imprisonment or fines; or both. Candidates are advised to obtain legal advice if necessary

Qualifications of a Candidate
A person may be nominated as a candidate in Banff's municipal election, if on Nomination Day the person is:
  • A 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian Citizen;
  • a resident of Banff for the six (6) consecutive months immediately preceding Nomination Day (a resident since March 18, 2017); and 
  • not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.

Sections 22-24 of the Local Authorities Election Act stipulate under what circumstances a candidate is NOT eligible for nomination.  It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure  that they are not in violation of any condition of eligibility.

Campaign Signs
Election signs may only be placed on private property and must be no larger than 1.0 m2 and no higher than 1.8 m.  They may not be illuminated.  Be sure to ask permission before locating signs on private lands.

Campaign Disclosures

All municipal election candidates are required to file either a Campaign Disclosure Statement and Financial Statement or Self Funded Campaign Voluntary Disclosure Statement.
