    Communities, organizations and individual Albertans across the province are exploring small-scale electricity generation as a way of bringing revenue, jobs, training and other economic, social and environmental benefits to their communities.While many Albertans already participate in micro-generation projects to provide electricity for their own use, electricity developed through community generation projects is connected to the province’s distribution system. Participation in community generation projects gives Albertans the ability to produce renewable energy and generate revenue by selling electricity to the grid.   1. Avalanche Skill Training Level 1

    January 21, 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM

    This two-day introduction teaches you to safely travel through avalanche terrain. The first day consists of lectures on the characteristics of avalanches, the mountain snowpack, avalanche terrain and backcountry travel, as well as using avalanche transceivers. The second day is spent in the field (in the Bow Summit area) to cover how weather, snowpack and terrain interact to create avalanches and how to avoid them. This course is based on the standards set by the Canadian Avalanche Centre and a certificate of completion is awarded to those who attend. Register online at banff.ca/register or call 403.762.1251.

  16. Bow Valley Naturalists - Bison Update

    In February 2017, Parks Canada began a 5-year pilot project to reintroduce North America’s largest land mammal (bison) to Canada’s first national park (Banff). Join Karsten Heuer for some behind-the-scenes stories of the effort to restore this iconic animal to a place where it’s been missing for 140+ years. Karsten Heuer is the Bison Reintroduction Project Manager for Banff National Park, a job he describes as the “most stimulating” in a 25-year career as a Park Warden and biologist in Alberta and the Yukon. He is also an award-winning author, known for his wildlife-inspired journeys undertaken with his documentary filmmaking wife, Leanne Allison (e.g. Being Caribou, Walking the Big Wild, Finding Farley).
